I’m guessing it won’t come as a shock to those who know me, but I happen to love flowers. I admit that during a college-age “hippie” phase I proudly declared that I found cut flowers unconscionable, but what can I say? I’ve changed. Lately it seems that everywhere I look, I’m surrounded by inspiring images of amazing flowers.

One of our nursery design clients made a special trip to her local source, to have these flowers on hand at a recent photo shoot.

An image that depicts pure happiness for me: flowers from my Dad, set against the backdrop of a chalkboard-painted wall where my sons play.
With all these beautiful images in mind, I’m thinking a fabulous, flowery fabric is in need of a major moment in an upcoming nursery design!

I have a confession to make: I’ve long considered myself a “pink-only” type of girl. It’s not that shades of lilac, lavender and violet aren’t beautiful, but they’re not usually my personal choice. So, when a client recently came to us with the idea of lilac and Tiffany Blue for her baby girl’s nursery, I have to admit that I wasn’t so sure. However, one look at this gorgeous set of custom crib bedding, and I’m sold. Completely and totally sold.

So, while we wait for more deliveries for the nursery, I’m spending a little time adjusting my thinking. Maybe I’m not a “pink-only” girl after all…

Several years ago, we had a nursery design client who asked us for a super comfortable sofa that she could put in her nursery near the crib so she could take little naps in there with her baby. So we got to work designing a completely custom upholstered sofa in a cleanable fabric that was also cozy and fit with the other nursery decor. Typically, the nursery is the smallest room in the house, but if you are lucky enough to have the space, consider adding a sofa!
This gorgeous piece is upholstered in an amazing pink and brown velvety fabric, and has casters on the legs so it can be easily moved around.

Feel like something more modern for your nursery? This super cozy sofa is a funky shape, but also very comfortable. The whole family can crawl up in this one!

Of course, we love using lots of color in our nursery designs, so it could be a lot of fun to add in a sofa with a crazy or colorful pattern. This one below is so kooky, but also so absolutely amazing!

We wouldn’t dare write a blog about nursery sofas without including one from one of our favorite children’s furniture designers, Jennifer DeLonge. This is a child-size sofa, which could be great in a nursery that is short on space. But don’t count on it for adult naps!

Although the design of a nursery or child’s room is something so personal that it should transcend trends, sometimes it feels pretty great to create a room that’s both beautiful and on-trend. Last week, we released images of a nursery design we recently completed in Orange County, featuring a bold color scheme of cobalt blue and lemon yellow paired with grey as the neutral tone (see more images HERE):

While browsing through magazines over the weekend, I couldn’t help but notice the abundance of evidence that this color palette is a major trend for Spring. In Style Magazine’s May issue describes how to pair grey as a neutral with both cobalt blue and lemon yellow.

Crate and Barrel’s recent catalog exclaims “Fashion’s hot new yellows are heating up interiors (even kitchens).” We’d just like to add “and nurseries” to that quote.

Notice the citrus yellow table lamp in this photo? Apparently West Elm is loving the cobalt and yellow color scheme too.

How great are these adorable animal photos?! These cute little pictures arrived with a recent shipment of artwork we ordered for one of our nursery design clients. For now, the actual artwork that we have received is super-top-secret. But, we just couldn’t help ourselves from sharing this postcard and the little bookmark.

My boys fought over these little baby animal photos, and then begged for some of the artwork for their own room. See more by this fantastic artist at Animal Print Shop, and keep an eye out for framed copies of these sweet photos in an upcoming nursery design.

It’s no secret that most interior designers today spend quite a bit of time online looking for inspiration, products for clients, or new sources for fabulous items. Lately, I’ve been finding inspiration from nurseries of the past – cribs from the 1800′s, vintage toys from the 1950′s and 60′s, and general style cues from former design trends.

Maybe it’s the new season of Mad Men or the return of fairy tales to popular culture, but I keep coming back to antiques, vintage and historical nurseries. I happened across these gorgeous illustrations of cribs, cradles, play tables and toys from an Etsy shop, KingPaper.

These are all from a book, “Folk Toys: Les Jouets Populaires” by Emanuel Hercik. The book is full of colorful and imaginative nursery drawings with lovely details, bright colors and lots of whimsy. I can’t help but wish that some of these beautiful creations were real (and for sale).

I couldn’t find much information about Emanuel Hercik, but by the looks of it, he definitely had the talent to be a furniture designer, if not a nursery designer himself. His drawings are a breath of fresh air.

Although we love writing blogs for our beloved Nursery Culture readers, we also contribute our talents to the amazing nursery and child resource, Project Nursery. This week, we’ve written about a design trend that we’re loving lately: watercolor prints. Check it out here.

OK, I admit it. I love JT. Great music, great style, great everything. Well, now Justin Timberlake, the fabulous man of many hats, has announced that he has partnered with designer Estee Stanley to create a line of home decor, HomeMint.

Elle Decor had the exclusive interview with Justin and Estee where they revealed how the collection came to be, their inspirations, and hopes for their new home decor venture.
“I think we definitely both have more of a European vibe, we’re inspired by Axel Vervoordt and Christian Liaigre. And we love ELLE DECOR! I was just in Paris and I bought about 10 copies of the European magazines over there and they were all amazing. Also, a lot of the shops in LA are great. Blackman Cruz, JF Chen, or in Paris, the outdoor markets. We’re more into antiques than contemporary pieces.” – Estee Stanley
“It’s true. Also, I like very clean, almost modern architecture, and the obstacle with something like that is making it extremely warm, because it doesn’t naturally lend itself to that. With everything we do together, we try to get the juxtaposition right. To make pieces and rooms that are multifaceted, that blend different genres of architecture and design.” - Justin Timberlake

The collection isn’t available for purchase until May, but the HomeMint website is live and you can sign up early for special previews.

No hints of any nursery or child decor items yet, but we sure hope to see some soon!

Today, we’re so proud to share our latest interior design project. With the help of the expert team at Rosenberry Rooms, we completed this entire design in less than a week (from seeing the home the first time, to installing the entire room!). Why the rush? For TV, of course! This project was designed for the daytime talk show “The Doctors”, for a segment about helping children sleep in their own rooms. View the video clip here.

Ever wonder what the inside of a child’s imagination looks like? Just take a peek into the amazing design of Kid’s Republic bookstore in Beijing. This vast and inspiring retail space was designed by SAKO Architects, and holy cow, it’s delightful!

The main entryway is a sensory tunnel with pantone-style steps wrapping up the walls, covered in plush carpet, with specifically placed lighting to create an almost out-of-body experience.

Inside is a vast layout of swirling bookshelves, rainbow colors, and walkways reminiscent of a Candyland board game.

The multi-colored paths continue into a stairway up to the second floor that’s so unique, it almost looks unclimbable.

Secret hideaways lurk around every corner where children can hole-up with their favorite new book, or simply relax and enjoy the absolutely spectacular environment around them. Stellar!

We’ve been waiting a long time for people to finally embrace lucite, and well, our day has come! It only takes one incredibly influential celebrity, like Beyonce, to launch a trend. Needless to say, we were thrilled to find out that Beyonce and Jay-Z have designed their nursery for baby Blue Ivy using the Nurseryworks Vetro Crib, which is made entirely of lucite! But Beyonce isn’t the only one – Tony Romo and Robert Downey Jr. also have this amazingly modern baby crib in their nurseries.

We were instant fans of the Vetro Crib ever since it’s inception a some time ago, and just this past September they debuted the matching lucite glider – so chic!

This is definitely a trend that we hope to see get bigger and bigger, so we can use more lucite in our own nursery designs!

Award-winning Norwegian cradle-maker, so-ro, offers a stunningly sleek and amazingly thoughtful cradle design. A top pick for celebrity moms like Ali Landry, the so-ro cradle has been gaining quite a reputation.

One of the brilliant features is a back-and-forth rocking movement, instead of the side-to-side motion that most cradles have. Some research supports this idea that the forward and back motion is more soothing to a baby.

The material? Baltic Birch with Walnut or White finish. So chic and classic. It even comes in double size for twins!

We’re looking forward to a chance to get our hands on one of these beautiful cradles for an upcoming nursery design project!
