A Week in Pins

It’s no secret – Pinterest is taking over the world.  We, like every other human being on the planet, have a Pinterest account and love to pin all sorts of things, creating an online archive of things we love – inspiration photos for nursery design, baby and children’s furniture, fabulous lighting, and all kinds of interesting decor ideas.  Here are some of our favorite pins from this week.

Upholstered Floral Chair in Velvet

This beautiful upholstered chair is fabulous.  Red legs, turquoise velvet seat and deep plum floral upholstered frame – dreamy!

Metallic Gold Bird Light

We’re in love with this gold bird pendant for a nursery design – how sweet would this little guy be floating near the ceiling?

Winding Red Staircase

It’s so refreshing when someone takes an interior design risk, like painting an iron spiral staircase scarlet red.

Gold Silver Table Lamp

These metallic gold and silver table lamps are so fun, we added them to our online store – a great choice for a lamp for the little table next to the nursery glider.

New Glam Lamps in our Shop!

Nursery lighting is often one of the most difficult things to find.  There’s so many options out there in cyberspace, that it can be overwhelming to find that perfect floor lamp or table lamp.  Well, hopefully we can help narrow your search!  We’ve just added these amazingly glam table and floor lamps to our online shop.

Glamourous metallic table lamp

We love these because they are glamorous, modern and completely versatile.  Because they are metallics, they can be considered a neutral, and worked into a lot of different designs.

Glam Metallic Gold Floor Lamp

They also border on both traditional and modern design, again making them great for an array of nursery styles.

Glam Modern Silver Floor Lamp

Check out these great nursery lighting finds here.

Big Bold Pattern Trend

Although we love writing blogs for our beloved Nursery Culture readers, we also contribute our talents to the amazing nursery and child design resource, Project Nursery.  This week, we’re loving the trend of big bold patterns in fashion and home decor, and we’re imagining ways to incorporate it into our nursery designs.

These pins are admittedly girly!

Animal Wallpaper for Nursery

This sweet Cat and Dog Wallpaper feels so organic with the sketchy nature of the drawings.  It would make great nursery wallpaper, or dare I say, a coloring wall for a little girl’s room.

Art Deco Inspiration for Design

With the upcoming release of The Great Gatsby, we’ve been seeing Art Deco influences popping up everywhere.  We predict that this trend will be major – it’s already starting in clothing, jewelry, and will shortly be dominating in interior design – from the geometric shapes to the black and gold color palette.  We’d love to see this trend incorporated into children’s rooms and nurseries – so chic!

Girl's Fashion Artwork for Nursery

And speaking of fashion, this lovely fashion art print in vibrant coral red and ivory would be dashing in a girl’s nursery.  Red is fast pulling out of its rut as a “scary color” and we’re seeing it used in both boy’s and girl’s nurseries – especially this slightly lighter coral hue.

Geometric Nursery Rug in Pink and Yellow

How great is this pastel geometric rug?  The color palette of bright yellow, peachy pink and sage green is soft, elegant and modern all at the same time.

Cobalt Blue, Coral and Brass Nursery

While perusing one of my favorite interior design blogs, Lonny, I came across this post about some trending colors popping up at High Point this year – cobalt blue, coral and brass.  One look and I was instantly inspired to create a nursery design around it.

Blue Coral Pink Nursery

Cobalt blue is fast becoming a color of choice for girl’s nursery designs, and coral is a nice step back from the standard baby pink.  And of course, retro brass has been huge lately, and it compliments both colors well.

Coral Blue Girl Nursery Colors

Modern Uptown Crib White

The Nurseryworks Uptown Crib is so chic and modern, and of course has fantastic brass accents.

Blue and Brass Dresser Vintage

This vintage blue dresser with brass hardware would make a great nursery changing table.  The combo of different sized drawers is perfect for storing all of baby’s little things.

Pink Coral Brass Chandelier Lamp

This scalloped pink and brass chandelier is whimsical and definitely nursery appropriate.  The chain detail at the top adds modernity and design longevity.  The ceramic coral table lamp is sweet and simple.

Blue Pink Floral Wallpaper

One of our favorite wallpaper brands, Hygge & West, carries this fabulous blue and coral daisy print wallpaper – amazing!

Land of Nod Coral Rug

And some finishing touches – a coral geometric rug from Land of Nod and Oilo Studio’s Blush Freesia glider pillow.

Our Favorite Baby Shower Gifts

Although we love writing blogs for our beloved Nursery Culture readers, we also contribute our talents to the amazing nursery and child design resource, Project Nursery.  This week, we’re taking a break from nursery design and sharing some of our favorite baby shower gifts – from designer diaper bags to adorable baby clothes!

Sweet Watercolor Nursery Art

Last week, we received an email from an artist who sells her watercolor prints on Etsy.  Her pieces are so simply sweet, that we had to share them with our readers.  Michele Spurza is an artist in Austin, TX who’s Etsy shop, Outside In Art Studio, has a variety of watercolor prints perfect for a nursery design or child’s room.

Custom Name Nursery Art

The above personalized art prints are one of her bestsellers, and it’s easy to see why.  The delicate watercolor heart serves as a background for baby’s name – a piece like this is timeless and sentimental.

Blue Flowers Nursery Artwork

Fancy something more dramatic?  We love the moody blues in this abstract floral watercolor.  The piece is subtle and bold at the same time and would make a great addition to a girl’s nursery with a cool color scheme.

Watercolor Nursery Art Print

This watercolor heart has the same simple sweetness, but without the name personalization.  A row of these prints in different colors would make a loving statement over a crib.

Orchid Watercolor Artwork

We also love this aqua blue orchid watercolor.  It’s an iconic shape, but the soft blending of colors makes it romantic and beautiful.

See the rest of Michele’s watercolor prints on Etsy.

Global Ideas

One of the things I love about being an interior designer for nurseries and children’s rooms, is that Naomi and I get to play with all kinds of fun ideas and inspirations.  We’re currently working on a historic home, which is providing lots of fun opportunities to include whimsical and vintage items in the design.

One such item, which we fell in love with is the fabulously simple chalkboard globe.  We think this would make a beautiful addition to this particular design project.

Globe for Nursery Interior Design Project

This little gem got us thinking about globes in general, and it looks like we’re not the only ones.  We located an abundance of beautiful ideas for using globes for design inspiration, including this shiny little metallic globe.

With a little research on Pinterest, we found that there’s no need to scour the globe for the perfect globe – unique options are all around us!

Girly Vanity Area with Floral Art

This glorious photo made you gasp, didn’t it?  There’s just so much to love – the big pink flower artwork, the textured turquoise desk, the geometric wallcovering, and that unbelievable velvet chair!

Nautical Dress for Little Girl

This little girl’s anchor dress from J Crew is so cute, I want it in my size.  Look closely and you can see it has 2 gold zippers at the bottom – such a great detail.

Pretty Pink Small Sofa

I’m loving this pretty in pink petite sofa.  There’s not many husbands out there who would want this in their bedroom, but sneaking it into a little girl’s room is totally acceptable.  This one is vintage 1960′s, but Mid Century Modern design is majorly trending right now, so it might not be too hard to find a replica.

Architecture with Heart Shaped Window

Have you ever seen anything so sweet?  I think every house should come with at least one heart-shaped window.  I’m envisioning a nursery design with a faux-version of this painted around the window on the inside.

Dwell Studio’s Gorgeous Books for Kids

When planning a nursery design, it’s easy to get caught up in the big stuff – the nursery furniture, great crib bedding, and adorable artwork.  But sometimes the most important (albeit subtle) interior design decision is the accessories.  For a nursery, these are things like a collection of cute stuffed animals, a decorative basket filled with toys or a great display of children’s books.

Many children’s books out there have the standard, and sometimes obnoxious, primary colors.  Well, what if your nursery isn’t designed with red, yellow and blue?  Enter Dwell Studio’s collection of classic literature with amazingly artful covers – so beautiful they could be framed! Girl's decorative book

How sweet is this version of Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen?  Light blue and hot pink are fantastic colors for a girl’s nursery, and this adorable book would fit right in.

Kid's Brothers Grimm classic book

This insanely beautiful cover of The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm is a statement of its own.

Kids version of Gullivers Travels book

For a boy’s nursery, this sweet version of Gulliver’s Travels would be a perfect addition.  The blue and white ship artwork on the cover is whimsical and classic.

Kid's Version of Emma Book

How can you not love this amazing cover of Emma?  This book would be fantastic framed up if your baby’s name is Emma, a pretty popular name these days.  Check out Dwell Studio’s full collection – their toys are pretty amazing too!

A Little Dose of Fashion

Even now and then, I get seriously inspired by something a step outside of the interior design world.  Sometimes it’s a great product design, something in nature, and of course, fashion.

Yesterday on Pinterest, one of our style icons, Rachel Zoe, posted an adorable fashion illustration someone had drawn of her and her baby boy, Skylar.  The artist, Jamie Lee Reardin, is a majorly talented fashion illustrator and her website is packed with gorgeous drawings inspired by heavy hitters like Marc Jacobs, Dior and Karl Lagerfeld.

rachel zoe stylist and baby

We just love that her drawing of Rachel Zoe and baby Skylar shows a mommy in action cruising around Los Angeles, proving to us all that working moms can still pull off fashionable clothes and high heels.

Fashion Hat Illustration

We also love this whimsical drawing Jamie did – look at those hats!  Maybe I should start showing up to our interior design meetings in one of these…

You can check out more of the Los Angeles based artist and even purchase illustration prints on her website.

Dwell Magazine: Issue Highlights

If you’re anything like us, you still get excited when the new issue of your favorite magazine comes in the mail.  And, if you’re anything like us, you have about 10 favorite magazines.  Yesterday’s mail came with a delightful gift – the new issue of Dwell Magazine.  Modern, fresh, and relevant, Dwell is definitely a interior design fave.  Somehow, Dwell always manages to find such unique decor from all over the world.

Like this modern compact desk from Japanese designer Yota Kakuda.  How great is this?  And with kelly green accents!

modern-wood-kids-desk

Check out this modern table and bench set in royal blue with white scratches – designed by Joost and Kiki.  This great table is pretty much perfect for a kid’s playroom – you can’t scratch it!  (Well, you can, but it wouldn’t show).

Just because we’re interior designers doesn’t mean we don’t love all other kinds of design – especially jewelry!  Dawes Design creates stunning gemstone jewelry.  The styles range from modern to rustic to elegant. modern-gemstone-jewelry

Thanks again, Dwell Magazine, for another pleasant afternoon of flipping pages.

New Hollywood Regency Nursery Furniture

Although we love writing blogs for our beloved Nursery Culture readers, we also contribute our talents to the amazing nursery and child design resource, Project Nursery.  This week, we’re showcasing the new line of Hollywood Regency nursery and kid’s furniture from one of our favorite furniture makers.  And we’ve styled it up too!

large mosaic wall

How crazy cool is this large scale neon wall treatment?  Something like this scaled down and painted on a kid’s room wall would be spectacular.

vintage modern kids desk

This vintage stunner is the Jean Prouve Child’s Desk.  Effortlessly modern and cool, this desk would be adorable in a children’s playroom or homework nook.

pink black swirled rug

We love the in-your-face pattern of this Tibetan silk rug!  The color combination of pinks, oranges, teals and blacks is spunky, yet sophisticated.

geometric modern high chair

Sometimes you just have to leave it to Europe to design some of the coolest things for kids.  This sleek geometric high chair with a metal base should be in every modern family’s kitchen!

Color Craze

It seems that we’re not the only ones captivated by the Spring.  Everywhere we look, our favorite blogs are featuring ways to bring color into the home.  As specialists in children’s interior design, we are fortunate to have many opportunities to work with bold and vivid color.  So, today we wanted to share some of the images we’ve recently seen by which we’re particularly inspired.

How beautiful and imaginative are the colored hinges and legs of this table?

This colorful “Rainbow House” is nothing short of amazing!

The interior design of this room shows how to beautifully execute a combination of colors.  This room appears to be subtle, in spite of the fact that it’s filled with color.

Perhaps it’s the sheer abundance of sparkly goodness that caught my eye, but the ideas in this image make me want to re-work my bedside table.

Finally, I love how this image shows the true impact of some well placed color.  This white home is expertly transformed by the bright dining chairs and colorful pendant lighting.
