Some babies are just lucky. Sunday night, we pulled up to the Los Angeles home of one of our nursery interior design clients, and took a moment to enjoy the beautiful scenery. This baby will not only have a beautiful nursery design, but a fantastic view as well. We count seeing the spectacular neighborhoods of Los Angeles and Orange Counties as one of the many reasons why we love our jobs so much!
Little Crown Interiors recently completed an absolutely stunning nursery for our celebrity interior design clients, Mel B. (aka Scary Spice) and husband Stephen Belafonte, in their Los Angeles home. One of our favorite celebrity nurseries to date, the design is going to be revealed this week on Access Hollywood. Currently scheduled for Tuesday August 16th at 7:30pm pacific time on NBC, Mel B’s baby nursery is a must-see, so be sure to set your Tivo!
Our celebrity nursery design includes incredibly luxurious items from top companies like Bratt Decor, Angel Song, Oopsy Daisy, I Lite 4 U, Naturalmat and Restoration Hardware Baby & Child as well as a huge amount of custom items designed by Little Crown Interiors, and impeccable workmanship by Lily’s Custom Upholstery & Drapery. Be sure to watch when Mel B’s nursery debuts on Access Hollywood, and stay tuned for our complete nursery design reveal in the coming weeks!
Every now and then, we interior designers come across an accessory or piece of furniture that looks, well, crazy. Since we are nursery and child space designers, what most people consider crazy, we consider whimsical and fun. We have the wonderful excuse to put weird, strange, funny and crazy things in our spaces since they are for the little guys, not the adults…technically. One of the craziest things we’ve ever seen while out shopping for clients was a life-sized horse with a lampshade on its head. And wouldn’t you know, said horse lamp just made an appearance on the cover of a new book, Crazy Design.
Crazy Design, by Beatrix Foisil-Penther and Claire Chamot
Flip through the colorful pages and you will find an array of bizarre, weird and hilarious pieces that might scare off an adult, but would playfully brighten up any nursery or child’s room. You can buy the book here, or go to the publisher’s site for more information.
While browsing through Architectural Digest‘s website, this amazing bathroom photo popped up on the sidebar. It was actually an advertisement for Velux Skylights, but the bathroom was so stunning! Large scale painted waves with a simple porcelain claw-foot bathtub make for a dreamy space to relax in and soak up some suds. Skylights are not something we typically incorporate into a nursery design, but fantastical bathrooms? Absolutely! For a little more fun, check out Velux’s website for a video about this stunner.

One of our favorite nursery design clients, Laila Ali, was on the red carpet at the 2011 ESPY awards on Wednesday, and she is looking better than ever. Her black and nude lace dress by Tadashi Shoji is absolutely stunning and flatters her body perfectly, as does her handsome husband, Curtis Conway. Laila Ali had her darling baby Sydney only about 4 months ago, and she is working hard on getting back in shape – well, it’s working! Check out how she’s doing it via her video blog on People.com. Congratulations Laila!

It’s no secret that Italy is an interior design Mecca. Italian style encompasses a chic and modern aesthetic with absolutely stunning craftsmanship. One company caught our eye in particular because of it’s extraordinary whimsy and out-of-this-world tailoring. Sicis is a sparkling gem of a company out of Italy that creates mostly mosaics, but has branched out into furniture, lighting and accessories. The furniture pieces completely took our breath away – just have a look for yourself!
Jalousie 1 Chair by Sicis
The Jalousie 1 Chair has 3 gorgeous birds, but look closely and you’ll see that the middle one is actually covered in mosaic.
Symphonie 1 Chaise by Sicis
If only flowers really grew cobalt blue, velvety soft and 3 feet high. This chaise is just plain dreamy.
Papilions 1 Sofa by Sicis
Those are not butterfly pillows – they are actually upholstered into the back of the sofa in fabulous jewel tones accenting the rich silvery cushions.
Sedia de Fidanzamento 2 Chair by Sicis
There’s nothing more whimsical than a chair with hearts stacked 6-high.
Sicis has so many incredible designs, we will surely share more soon! For now, we’ll dream about the day we can put one of these gorgeous pieces into one of our interior design projects…
Elle Decor Magazine has always been a staple source of inspiration and resources for Little Crown Interiors. We just love their savvy and elegant approach to interior design. In addition to the print magazine, we also receive their newsletter, which arrived in our inbox today and featured a fabulous faux-bois bench by Currey & Company. The Elwynn collection even has a smaller bench and matching chair!
As interior designers, our eyes are trained to see line, shape, color, form and function in everything we come across. Every so often, we come across something in the design world that makes us think, “how did they come up with that?”. Usually it’s an innovative product or fabulously designed piece of furniture. But take a drive down to your local miniature golf course, and you’ll see a whole world of dis-proportioned, off-kilter, wacky designs that somebody had to design. It really makes you think – how did they come up with that idea? And who actually builds these things? Well, we found out, and they are incredibly imaginative, talented designers – just in a smaller world.

These masterpieces of mini-architecture are designed and built by SceneWorks, a small company out of Arkansas. They create everything from small accessory pieces to entire cities – all either miniature, replica or facade. It’s fascinating, really. Some of these creations are so realistic, it seems like you could just walk up and open the front door.

Most of these are projects built for Linton’s Enchanted Gardens in Indiana, which has now been added to our “must-see” list. Next time your drive by your neighborhood miniature golf course, just take a minute to reflect on the amount of creativity and hard work it takes to bring them to life!
House for an Art Lover is just that – a house for an art lover. Designed by the great Rennie Mackintosh, the house had rooms with names like The Music Room, The Lower Gallery, and The Interpretation Room – a far cry from the bedroom-bathroom-kitchen layout. Recently, while reigniting our romance with Mr. Mackintosh via Google Images, a photo of The Music Room popped up. Strangely enough, it wasn’t music that was taking center stage – it was the tall vertical shape in the back that looked like…a baby crib.

After a few double-takes, it became clear that it wasn’t a baby crib, but a piano built from floor to ceiling. Oh, how we wish it were a crib! A crib so divine, so stunning, so angelic and conveniently available for purchase. Although not a crib, the intricate design and elegant details speak for themselves. Rennie Mackintosh was a master of curve, subtle representation and truly spiritual design.

It’s images like these that give us endless inspiration when creating designer nurseries for our clients. Just because it doesn’t exist, doesn’t mean we can’t dream of it!

Take a virtual tour of House for an Art Lover yourself and soak it all in. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, hop on a plane to Glasgow (and send us a postcard).
This June, Little Crown Interiors exhibited at the PLUSH show in Los Angeles, held at the stunning Vibiana. We were honored to showcase two pieces of Eye Candy by up-and-coming modern art studio, Lex Modern. Lucky for the attendees, our friends “Lollipop” and “Candy” were going to go home with one lucky winner. The two beautiful stretched canvas pieces were won by Erika Q. – Congratulations! Shown in the photo below, you can see that these pieces are gender neutral, but definitely don’t lack any spunk. We hope Erika loves them as much as we do!
To say this week has been a nursery design whirlwind would be a bit of an understatement! Fresh off our amazing experience at the PLUSH show last Sunday, we are thrilled to announce the completion of our latest celebrity nursery. During the month of May, Little Crown Interiors worked energetically to complete a gorgeous nursery design for celebrity mom Laila Ali, just in time for a People Magazine photo shoot, for an article which is running in this week’s print edition.
People Online also ran a great article with more beautiful photos of the new mom and her gorgeous daughter.
Laila Ali’s baby nursery was also covered by LilSugar. We’ve been readers of the Sugar Network for years, and it’s been a long time dream to be featured on LilSugar - how amazing to be covered by both People Magazine and LilSugar in one week!!
And, we were so thrilled to share a fun little video and exclusive pictures of this celebrity interior design project with our friends at Project Nursery too!
You can see more of our photos of Laila Ali’s baby nursery on our website here, and check back on the Little Crown Interiors Nursery Culture blog for more behind the scenes photos about the install and details about this fun celebrity nursery project!
This year’s most anticipated baby event took place on Sunday at the gorgeous Vibiana in Los Angeles and Little Crown Interiors was proud to be an exhibitor. We started our day bright and early (5 AM) to set up a beautiful display for PLUSH show attendees…
After setting up, we took a quick moment for a snapshot with our fantastic work crew/ husbands!
Next, we said “Hi” to our friends Pockets and Cristy – the owners of Newport Cottages. We’ve worked extensively with them to create the “Hope” Crib to benefit breast cancer research, and it’s always a pleasure to see them. We also got to see tons of our colleagues in the industry, including the Project Nursery team, Lonni Paul of Petit Nest, Alexandra the Beverly Hills Mom, Sarah and Allison of SPI Baby, the owners of Spoiled Beginnings and many more (we just didn’t have the camera around to capture the moments).
With spent the last few minutes before the show opened checking out the beautiful venue. The huge paper flowers on the PLUSH show sign were to-die-for!
And, we can officially cross the “step and repeat” off of our bucket lists!
As soon as the PLUSH show opened, the guests from all over Los Angeles visited our display to talk about nursery interior design. Tons of little attendees tried out the fantastic Hut Hut Kids by Kalon Studios – these little people couldn’t have been any cuter!
We even had an tired little guy decide to try out the crib (made by Kalon Studios)!
Did you get a look at that sheet? We hand painted it as a fun reminder to show attendees that the celebrity interior design team of Little Crown Interiors loves a good Hollywood nursery!
At the end of the day, we were so happy with the outcome of the PLUSH show, but we definitely needed a rest. We sat ourselves down on the Hut Huts and enjoyed a quiet moment before packing up our display!
Be sure to check back on our nursery culture blog this week – we’ll be announcing giveaway winners, and also announcing a once-in-a-lifetime special offer… Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook!
With just a few more days until Los Angeles’ hottest event of the year, Little Crown Interiors is putting the finishing touches on our display. Yesterday afternoon, our rug from KoKo Company arrived, and it’s super cool. Check it out here with our Hut Huts from Kalon Studios.
We’re super excited to be showing a KoKo Company rug at the PLUSH show – they’re actually made of plastic, are super durable, and best-of-all: can be easily cleaned – with a hose! We think PLUSH show attendees are going to love seeing this fun find!
The PLUSH show, taking place Sunday, June 5th at the Vibiana in Los Angeles, is getting crazy amounts of press coverage and is sure to sell out. Details about the PLUSH show are all over Twitter, Facebook and the world wide web. It’s been featured in the Los Angeles Times, and the KTLA morning news. We did the logical thing and immediately brought in two of our favorite product testers…
Our product testers promptly proved that the Hut Huts are every bit as fun as we had hoped they would be. Too bad our little friends can’t help us out in our PLUSH show display!
All the gorgeous modern nursery furniture in our display is being made by Los Angeles based Kalon Studios. Dedicated to innovative, sustainable, contemporary design, the Kalon Studios children’s line caught our eye some time ago, and we’ve been itching for the perfect opportunity to work with them. Best of all, the items we’re displaying will be for sale at the event, so if you or someone you know is in the market for some fantastic modern nursery furniture, be sure to come to the PLUSH show to check out Kalon Studios.
