On Trend: Cobalt Blue + Lemon Yellow

Although the design of a nursery or child’s room is something so personal that it should transcend trends, sometimes it feels pretty great to create a room that’s both beautiful and on-trend.  Last week, we released images of a nursery design we recently completed in Orange County, featuring a bold color scheme of cobalt blue and lemon yellow paired with grey as the neutral tone (see more images HERE):

While browsing through magazines over the weekend, I couldn’t help but notice the abundance of evidence that this color palette is a major trend for Spring.  In Style Magazine’s May issue describes how to pair grey as a neutral with both cobalt blue and lemon yellow.

Crate and Barrel’s recent catalog exclaims “Fashion’s hot new yellows are heating up interiors (even kitchens).”  We’d just like to add “and nurseries” to that quote.

Notice the citrus yellow table lamp in this photo?  Apparently West Elm is loving the cobalt and yellow color scheme too.

Design Reveal!

Today, we’re so proud to share our latest interior design project.  With the help of the expert team at Rosenberry Rooms, we completed this entire design in less than a week (from seeing the home the first time, to installing the entire room!).  Why the rush?  For TV, of course!  This project was designed for the daytime talk show “The Doctors”, for a segment about helping children sleep in their own rooms.  View the video clip here.

Wave Goodbye…

2011 was a very productive year for us, and we’ve now created over 80 nurseries and child spaces.  To make space for new rooms on our website, we have to say goodbye to some of our images.  Next week, we’ll be adding new photos of an adorable Western theme nursery, so we wanted to share this train theme boy’s room one more time, before removing it from our portfolio…

The starting point for this boy’s train theme bedroom was an idea we had to use actual wooden train tracks as chair rail style molding.

Throughout the room we placed train-theme elements, such as these beautiful chrome table lamps reminiscent of a train station.

The custom built hard-wood window seat was made to perfectly match the shutters and provide both storage and a fun place for the family to enjoy their space.

We finished off the room by adding custom towels and cute bath accessories to the attached bathroom.  Our goal was to create a fun and functional room for this train-lovin’ guy – mission accomplished.

Wave Goodbye…

2011 has been a very productive year for us thus far, and we’re completing gorgeous nurseries and fabulous children’s rooms at a rapid pace as the year comes to a close.  To make space for new rooms on our website, we have to say goodbye to some of our images.  This week, we’ll be adding new photos of a gorgeous nursery design in Orange County, so we wanted to share this gender neutral nursery one more time, before removing it from our portfolio…

We completed this gender neutral nursery for a wonderful family in Orange County.  Although the end result may look understated, virtually every element in this room was customized.  The end panels on the crib were made with fabric to match the custom sleeper sofa.  The custom blackout curtain panels, custom crib bedding set, and other textiles including custom sofa pillows were all made from perfectly coordinated fabrics.  We added new little knobs to the dresser, and had a custom rug made to tie the room together beautifully.

Whenever we’re creating a gender neutral nursery, we always try to leave space for some special items that can be added after the baby arrives.  In this case, the custom monogram over the crib was made extra special by creating a unique wood molding shape around the block letters.  Not long after we completed the nursery, this Orange County homeowner welcomed a healthy beautiful baby girl.

The beautiful residential photography was done by our friend, the extremely talented David Casas of Full Spectrum Photography in Orange County.  We hope you enjoyed this last look at our “Eclectic Gender Neutral Nursery”, and stay tuned for a brand new room on our website soon!

New Trends in Nursery Design

As usual at this time of year, Little Crown Interiors just arrived back home (Los Angeles and Orange County) from the ABC Expo – the largest juvenile industry event of the year. Although it may not sound very glamorous, we actually had a great time and found some fabulous new discoveries at the event. One of the biggest trends we noticed is the much bigger (and much welcomed) presence of lucite and acrylic materials.

As long time mega-fans of lucite anything, we were beyond excited at last year’s show when Nurseryworks debuted the very first completely lucite crib, the Vetro. This year, to our utter delight, they created a corresponding match-made-in-heaven: a drop-dead, unbelievable lucite rocker.

A new-comer to the American crib market, ubabub, also struck our fancy with a line of cribs featuring breathable lucite panels. Delicate star details were cut out of the panel to allow for airflow as well as an added design element.

In the accessories department, we saw a few new and exciting things along the same lines. We discovered a new art company called Art Addiction, to which we can truly see ourselves becoming addicted. Instead of the standard canvas wrap art typical in nursery design, they took it one step further and printed their art onto acrylic panels with unbelievably vivid color and fantastic graphics. We can’t wait to make use of these in a nursery design!

Lastly, we were taken aback by the absolute genius and simplicity of acrylic picture frames by Wexel Art. Yes, we’ve seen products like this before, but these have a new edge – magnets. The laser cut acrylic panels have strong magnets on both sides to easily hold and change your artwork – brilliant!

That’s it for now, but stay tuned for more of our favorite new releases of the year.

The Fabulous Life of a Nursery Designer

Being a nursery designer truly is the best “job” in the world. I get to spend my days thinking up fabulous new ways to make our clients’ nurseries special. I get to work with my best friend. And, lately, we’ve been getting to do some pretty fantastic things outside of design. Take Tuesday, for example. Here’s Naomi talking about design inspiration for TV.

Filming gave us the opportunity to visit one of our favorite shops in Southern California – Newport Cottages – at their gorgeous store in the Fashion Island shopping center, in Orange County. Always a source of inspiration, we fell in love with this cute little bunny bank, among other things…

Further, our little field trip gave us the chance to talk to the owners of Newport Cottages about our “Hope” Crib collaboration. Together, we designed the Hope Crib to benefit Breast Cancer Research. The project is gaining momentum, as one of our recent celebrity nurseries – for Laila Ali’s daughter Sydney – recently included a “Hope” Crib. Check it out in this recent issue of People Magazine:

As the weekend approaches, I can’t help but wonder what fun and excitement is in store for next week… We’ll be sure to let you know!

A Brand New Big Girl Room Design!

Today, Little Crown Interiors is proud to share one of our recent kid’s room designs – a modern girl’s bedroom in Orange County, CA.

Shades of lilac with cool grey and pops of an unexpectedly modern yellow grace the recently completed girl’s bedroom design by the expert design team of Little Crown Interiors.  The culmination of several weeks of intense design work, the transitional space for a 2-year old in Orange County, CA, is modern, feminine, playful and functional.

Ever-beautiful Serena and Lily bedding from the “Delphine” collection served as the starting point from which the design took shape.  Special artwork, previously purchased by the family on a recent vacation, shares the walls with customized stretched canvas pieces by Lex Modern and Avalisa.

Naomi and Gerri’s Interview in OC Family

At the end of last week, I (Gerri Panebianco) was at the pediatrician with my little boys, when I noticed that copies of the May issue of OC Family were available in the waiting room.  I opened one up, and there it was – a two page interview with Naomi Coe Alon and yours truly!

Little Crown Interiors featured in OC Family

As nursery interior designers, it’s our sincere pleasure to be featured in this particular magazine.  We have had an office in Orange County since we started Little Crown Interiors in 2008, and have done many of our favorite projects locally.  In fact, both of the rooms shown in this article were created for clients in Orange County!

Our “Royal Fairytale” nursery is shown on the nursery page…

New Kid’s Room Design Preview

Last week, we completed a kid’s room design in Orange County, CA – a fabulous big girl bedroom for a 2 year old girl.  We commissioned our favorite photographer – David of Full Spectrum Photo Studio - to capture the room for us, and will share the beautiful photos as soon as we can.  However, for now, we thought you’d like to see a sneak peek…

It’s not uncommon for us (Naomi Alon and Gerri Panebianco) to “get our hands dirty” for a nursery or kid’s room design, and this project was no exception.  Here’s Naomi displaying her expert picture hanging skills (in all seriousness, she really is an expert!).

Here’s Gerri cutting the FLOR tiles into an animal hide shape.

Here’s a first look at the custom wall decal we had made for the room – it turned out beautifully and was remarkably easy to apply, considering how detailed it is.

When all the work was done, and all the items were in their proper places, David got to work taking photos (and yes, that’s Gerri in the background posting to facebook).

We put a huge amount of effort into each photo.  We check, re-check, adjust lighting and items, and generally “futz” until we get the shot just the way we like it (so we can share with you!).

Stay tuned to see this finished kid’s room design soon!

Glam-O-Rama! We’re Featured in BabyTalk

One of our most extravagant nursery designs to date – a Glamorous, Modern Girl’s Nursery in Orange County, CA -is featured in the April issue of BabyTalk Magazine!  And, as the requests for information have been pouring in, we thought we would post some of our responses on our facebook and twitter accounts.  Do you have a question about the bedding, paint, ceiling, etc.?  Please email your request to info (at) little crown interiors (dot) com, and then be sure to Like Us on Facebook and Follow Us on Twitter to see our responses.

Glamorous Girl's Nursery

Taking our client’s taste and the style of the home into account, we designed this nursery to be both glamorous/ traditional (i.e. the Bratt Decor crib), and modern too (i.e. the Monte Design glider).  Many more photos and details of this room are available on our website HERE.  This particular glamorous nursery is a favorite of ours – due in large part to the massive amount of custom items we created in the room.  From the fabric draped ceiling and custom blackout curtain panels, to the custom crib bedding (which is available for sale in the “Shop Online” Section of our website, or by clicking HERE) and the one-of-a-kind changing table, we were able to custom-make almost every element of this room.

We love how BabyTalk Magazine sourced some alternative options for items in the room.  The writers found adorable items, readily available that would fit perfectly into a glamorous girl’s room – be sure to check out their suggestions by picking up your copy today!

Nursery Design in BabyTalk

We’d like to give a special thanks to Sabrina James and Kim Hays of BabyTalk magazine for featuring this nursery design.  It’s always such an honor to share our projects with the new and expecting Moms, and we are thrilled to be included in BabyTalk Magazine.

Train Theme Boy’s Room!

Little Crown Interiors is proud to share photos of a recent kid’s room design project!  As nursery designers, we spend much of our time working on nursery design projects for babies who have not yet been born.  Our nursery designs typically center around the needs and wants of a new Mom.  So, it’s refreshing and fun to take our nursery designer hats off, and spend some time designing for a kid’s room.  It’s so rewarding to see the look on a child’s face when we’re done with their kid’s room design.  In this case, we created a bedroom for a boy, with a train theme.  While Little Crown Interiors works nationwide, we are based in Orange County and Los Angeles, California.  These photos were taken at a project we completed in South Orange County.  We completed this kid’s room design at the end of last year, and are thrilled to show your our photos.

This kid’s room design features plenty of our signature custom items.  We love the custom bedding and custom coordinating textiles, which we designed and produced for this train theme room and one lucky little boy.

Did you notice that chair rail?  Expertly installed by our kid’s room design team, that special railing is actually a wood train track which separated the two tone wall paint all around the room.

Of special note is the window seat, which was custom built for this room.  The finish perfectly matches the blinds, and the custom designed cushions provide the perfect spot for every member of the family to sit and enjoy this special space.

We also added some special touches to the attached bathroom in this kid’s room design.

And, we we just love this closet – perfectly organized and so user-friendly!!

Perhaps the most rewarding part of this project was “picture day”, when we returned to the home with David of Full Spectrum Photo Studio, to take these photos of the completed kid’s room design.  Our little client was so happy with his completed room, that he literally jumped for joy!
