I’m so excited to finally reveal this nursery design! This colorful modern safari nursery is in a beach home in Laguna Beach with an amazing view of the ocean. The house was fully remodeled in a very modern style, so we wanted to create a nursery that flowed with the modernity of the home, but that was also fun and colorful.
When I first saw the room in its “before” state, it was a guest room and had a full wall of blackout curtains from my client’s previous designer who did the rest of the home when they moved in. The curtains were hand-painted and gorgeous, so we opted to keep them and work them into the nursery design. So the blues and greens from the curtains set the foundation for our color palette, and we went from there!
We chose a modern white and acrylic crib, and then had the changing table and bookcase customized with sage green drawer interiors to coordinate with the curtains. Little touches like that really make a room feel special! The sage green color was also mirrored in the tree shelf in the entryway to the room (scroll down for that photo). Instead of a traditional nursery glider, we went with a classic Eames lounger insteadโmy client loves modern design and finds this piece to be super comfortable as well! The leather is easy to clean since spills can just be wiped off, and it’s high quality means it will last for years.
We had initially talked about doing a wallpaper accent wall in here, but because the curtains have such a bold pattern, I didn’t want to put another pattern right up against it. So instead, we custom designed a wall mural with Allyson Wong, pulling those same blues and greens, and then added a pop of yellow for the giraffes. The theme slowly evolved as a modern safari look after we decided on the mural, and we added little touches of other safari elements throughout. We added a tiny acrylic elephant mobile over the crib for that extra touch.
Instead of a traditional glider, my client really wanted to use an Eames lounge chair in the nursery. She had one for her first child and loved it, so we got another one for the new nursery. We got it in white leather so it will be super easy to clean!
The nursery had a small hallway entrance and there wasn’t much room for furniture, so I chose this sage green tree bookcase. It’s shallow enough as to not block the entryway, and it’s the first thing you see when you walk into the room!
The toys in this nursery were considered part of the decor since they were all on display, and I chose each one carefully. Since toys are always out, I like to choose pieces that coordinate with the nursery if possible (and that they will also hopefully enjoy playing with!)
One of my favorite little things about this nursery is that the inside of the drawers on the bookcase and changing table are painted to match the green in the curtains and on the tree bookcase. Itโs a fun little surprise!
We finished the space with a large soft blue rug, which might just be my favorite part of this design. The color and pattern reflect the ocean, which is, after all, right outside the door. You can see more photos of this colorful safari nursery in my portfolio!
