Playrooms can be even more challenging to design than nursery. Why? Because a playroom is rarely just a playroom. It’s usually a family space, or paired with another room that needs to have its own function. In this case, our E-Design client came to us wanting a sophisticated yet playful playroom designed in an unused formal dining area in their beachfront Florida home. They wanted the playroom to also function as an adult media room where the whole family could hang together.

The next challenge? Because this space was previously a dining room, there were no doors closing off the area to the rest of the house (even though there are plans for installation in the future). So, we had to make sure the playroom had a clean aesthetic that flowed with the home with plenty of storage for hiding away toys.

The most significant piece in the room was the media center, and we chose a large one with space for the TV and plenty of storage. This piece became the focal point of the room and needed to match the crisp white style of the rest of the home. There was an existing abstract painting in the dining room that the client wanted to reuse for the playroom, so we were able to pull a little color from that while keeping the rest of the room neutral.

The room also had a nice high ceiling, so we could add an extra-large chandelier! We used a big neutral area rug to cover the floor and layered on a play mat as well for extra padding or to use for messier playtime.

There is a cute play table and chair set that’s not too juvenile, and a low foldable sofa that the whole family can pile onto. We used lots of storage bins so there are plenty of spots to tuck away toys, and went with more natural textures like rattan for that beachy vibe. And of course, plants! Plants were an essential part of this design to give the playroom a refreshing feel.
